Confirm the car is what it claims to be
The VIN, registration, model code, year, specification and seller documents should agree. Inconsistent details are a reason to pause before looking at price.
Build a condition picture
Use all available evidence: independent reports, auction sheets where applicable, service invoices, diagnostic results, detailed photographs and direct inspections. The evidence varies by source, so gaps should be identified clearly.
- Structural and accident indicators
- Paintwork, glass, wheels and tyres
- Interior wear versus recorded mileage
- Warning lights and diagnostic history
- Mechanical leaks, noise and maintenance
- Keys, manuals and included equipment
Extra checks for EVs and hybrids
Battery state-of-health evidence is useful when available, but its format and reliability vary. Charging compatibility, cable inclusion, warranty status, thermal management and model-specific battery history also matter.
Know what cannot be guaranteed
No remote check can remove every risk from a used vehicle. The objective is to gather enough reliable evidence, price any visible issue and reject cars where the unknowns are not acceptable.
This guide is general information, not a vehicle-specific quotation or legal, tax or registration advice. Requirements and costs can change; MintCarz confirms the applicable details for each vehicle in writing.
